Preface - Challenges of engineering intelligent environments

چکیده
This issue of JAISE is focused on the theme of Challenges of Engineering Intelligent Environments. The last decade has produced very interesting advances in the development of Intelligent Environments (IEs). These advances have benefitted different aspects of such systems with different intensity. The main problem is that as IEs are composed of several components: hardware, software, networks, and interfaces, we need all of these components to perform at a certain level of quality so that the overall system is satisfactory to the users. Although good progress was made across all the mentioned areas, the inherent complexity of IEs means that there is still some significant work to be done and several challenges remain open for our community to tackle. This Thematic Issue presents a snapshot of those challenges and the state of the art. We hope that this Thematic Issue is found inspiring by researchers who are active in the area as well as motivate new research in this domain. We are grateful to the Guest Editors who organized this Thematic Issue: Asier Aztiria (University of Mondragón, Spain), Aaron S. Crandall (Washington State University, USA), and Gordon Hunter (Kingston University, London, UK). The last pages of this issue provide information on successful vivas by Ph.D. students working in the area.

Introduction to the thematic issue on Challenges in Engineering Intelligent Environments
This issue of JAISE is focused on the theme of Challenges in Engineering Intelligent Environments. Since the inception of ubiquitous computing, the difficulties in deploying computing systems in our everyday environments have been recognized. Computing resources, electrical power consumption, visibility, networking, wireless tools, user interfaces, ad hoc infrastructures, security and other iss...
متن کاملAn Adaptive Weighted Fuzzy Controller Applied on Quality of Service of Intelligent 5G Environments
in computational intelligence area, it is suitable to fulfill the analysis in order to interpret the concept and sources of uncertainty and the conditions of its incidence, and hence pursuit for reliable techniques of dealing with it. Dealing with uncertainties in this case is a challenging and multidisciplinary activity. So, there is a need for a capable tool for modeling, control, and analyti...
متن کاملPreface to Semantic Web Technologies for Mobile and Pervasive environments
Artificial Intelligence provides a rich set of methods and tools for implementing the Ambient Intelligence vision, i.e. to transform our environments into smart spaces assisting as with our everyday tasks in an intelligent, seamless and non-obtrusive way. Among them, Semantic Web technologies, such as RDF, ontology languages and others, can be used to address several of the challenges that come...
متن کاملPreface to the Second Issue
Preface to the Second Issue As the world moves steadily to become a knowledgebased economy, education and learning have never been more important. Technology is playing an increasingly crucial role in the delivery of education, which in turn is driving research into the search for better technological solutions. The age of intelligent environments is bringing such pedagogical advances as smart ...
متن کاملThe ROADMAP Meta-model for Intelligent Adaptive Multi-agent Systems in Open Environments
In this paper, we introduce the ROADMAP meta-model, designed to describe intelligent adaptive systems in open environments, using agent concepts such as roles. Developing intelligent adaptive systems creates new challenges in engineering software quality attributes such as correctness and reliability. The ROADMAP meta-model captures our understanding of properties of intelligent adaptive system...
